The Common Buzzard in the photograph had been found and sent to us by people concerned about the survival of this beautiful two year old female predator. We had absolutely no idea where and how it was found when we received her. It was obvious however that the bird’s plumage had sustained damage which made her immediate release impossible, despite the fact that there were no other injuries.

The damage to the bird’s plumage was caused by incorrect delivery, for which a more appropriate box should have been used.Despite the willingness of the hawk’s rescuers to help it, improper handling almost cost the bird its freedom and even its life. As a result, we kept the Common Buzzard for two weeks until its flight feathers healed and it was in proper condition to fly to freedom. It is obvious that when we come across wild animals in need and we want to help them, we should never forget that they are wild and therefore require careful handling so that their condition does not deteriorate further. So, after marking ringing it, we finally set the young Common Buzzard free in the region of Nea Triglia, Chalkidiki, on March 6th 2011. We wish a good journey from the bottom of our hearts and we hope that we only see her again in her natural environment.

On January 26, we were notified by Mr. Theodoros Ioannou, citizen of Kalochori who had witnessed on the marshes of Kalochori a wounded pelican limping and unable to fly. Soon enough one of our members got there to examine the case. In fact, the pelican was standing wounded at the middle of a marsh without having anything to eat. His life was in danger.

The same day and despite the actual difficulties (a vast area covered with mud) we decided to set out a rescue operation. The next day we informed the Axios Management Authority, Vassilis Chatzikontidis (a biofarmer and citizen of Kalochori that is actively concerned with recycling and…..for whom definitely words are not enough) as well as some volunteers.By the afternoon we were all gathered at Kaloxori( Management Authority stuff, Action for Wildlife volunteers, the people who notified us about the pelican and Vassilis Chatzikontidis) to put our rescue plan into practice .Initially,we spent some time observing the bird to figure out its behavior and evaluate the case. At both sides of the wetland there was a deep canal that rendered it inaccessible. On seeing the bird moving towards the shore, we attempted to approach by another side so that we could cut his way toward the wetland and drive him across the shore. Unfortunately, we got stuck in the mud so we intended to astound the bird from the part of the shore that was less visible to it.However, the pelican felt our intentions and began to fly towards the center of the lagoon. We had to move rapidly. At the point we had managed to surround him and get hold of him, he fled.Luckily, exhausted as he was he didn’t get that far and after a while he surrendered at our hands.

The pelican was found weak with a hook nailed on one of his legs and a hanging wing His condition was considered severe and the hours that followed were critical for his survival. He was transferred to our first aid station at Mikropolis where he got hydrated and the following days he gradually began to eat. Now, he is out of risk but unfortunately the damage on his wing can’t be recuperated. Therefore he has already been transferred to Ekpaz (Hellenic Wildlife Hospital) in Aigina.

Watch instances from the rescue………..
