The last of the swifts
Summer is gone and along with most of the swifts that came with it and received our concern and care all this period.
Nevertheless, a few individuals still remain in the area due to the unusually favorable weather conditions. One of these birds happened to be brought to our facilities by a sensitized fellow citizen who found it on the street. Fortunately, the bird was in good condition and was rather eager to fly again. Thus, after spending a night is its temporary home (a carton box) it was ready to be released the next day.
The releasing procedure was more than known for the two “Action for Wildlife” volunteers as it has been repeated many times before. Meeting point the Kaftantzoglio Stadium, morning hours. The space there is large enough without obstacles, so the bird can fly low for a while before gaining height. As soon as we opened the box and hold it in our hands, the bird was eager to regain its freedom, making several attempts to slip out of our hand and fly again. And it did it on its first try! We watched the bird fly fro a while around the stadium, until it was no longer visible up in the sky.
The release was successful and we left very satisfied. Perhaps this was the last swift we get for this year. Migration is a difficult procedure for all species, but necessary for their survival. We hope they are successful to this year’s migration and will be waiting for them next summer.
